Rick and Morty are back! The new season kicked off like the good old days, with a slew of mischief and interspatial cable (and sexy Aquaman!)

What is the series about?
It all starts as usual: the grandfather and grandson are trying to escape from another scrape, and Morty thinks that this time they will not get out. So he decides to call Jessica — a classmate he’s crazy about — and is surprised when she sets him up for an evening date. Fortunately, their ship falls into the Earth’s ocean. Unfortunately, one of Rick’s enemies lives here-Mr. Nimbus, the lord of the water in red tight swimming trunks. This time everything is fine, the grandfather and grandson are at home. Rick opens a portal (“to Narnia”) and throws out a few crates of wine to infuse them (time goes much faster in this world), and then appease Nimbus with them.

Mr. Nimbus, without waiting for the gift, arrived at the Smiths’. While Beth and Jerry are seriously considering having a threesome with a swaggering amphibian man, Rick sits down with him at the negotiating table. Unfortunately, at the same time, Jessica comes to visit the Smiths, so Morty has to open a portal to get the wine that Rick sent to an unknown place.

That’s it?

No. In parallel, the second story unfolds in the series, related to Morty’s journey through the “Narnian” portal. It turns out that the wine has been lying in front of the house of a charming married couple who look like bluish dogs for several centuries. The kind Mr. Hoovey volunteers to help Morty and takes the wine to the Smiths. But soon he is waiting for the terrible news: time in his world flies much faster. He was gone for half a minute, and in Narnia, many years have passed — his wife is dead, there is only a vengeful son at home who kills his father.

Morty will go to this world a few more times, and everything will change again. In the end, the descendants of Howie will begin to believe that the evil alien Morty will return again, and therefore they need to create their own order and keep watch (just like in “Game of Thrones”).

Who is Mr. Nimbus anyway?
Viewers compare the sexy lord of the oceans to Aquaman played by Jason Momoa, but he also looks like Namor from Marvel. Namor was one of the first opponents of the Fantastic Four and personally of Reed Richards, the team leader. By the way, the writer of this series, Jeff Loveness, worked on Marvel comics about Spider-Man, Groot and Nova, and also wrote the script for the third “Ant-Man”.

What could have been overlooked?

The title (Mort Dinner Rick Andre) refers to Louis Mahl’s film My Dinner with Andre (1981) and The Eric Andre Show (2012).
At the very beginning of the series, Rick and Morty are reflected in one of the crystals, dressed as Blade.
Morty watches the interspatial cable TV, which advertises the oh-oh-oh-very attractive set-top box “Nintendo 69”. We are waiting for pre-orders!
Mr. Nimbus mentions Diane, Rick’s late wife and Beth’s mother.
Nimbus also notes Morty’s sluggishness and says that Kyle was much better. Maybe we’ll finally learn something about Rick’s previous sidekicks.
The verdict
It’s a pretty charming series, especially the part with the whole civilization built on hatred for Morty. Season five opens with a classic episode in the spirit of the early “Rick and Morty “(no excessive meta-play, as in season four!). And it also opens up the past – it seems that sooner or later we will find out what happened to Beth’s mother.
