1. Saxon Pub has a lot of famous songwriters role through there weekly. A bunch of people no one has ever heard of but have written for all the famous guys.

  2. He was a big lovable teddy bear until I watched Barton Fink.

  3. This might have been true in the past, but my experience is that people on both side of the aisle lack the ability to see nuance.

  4. I agree. Due to a tide of noise that's largely drowned out nuance, a lot of people seem to have become polemic in their thinking. Division drives division, much like a penny must have a heads and a tails.

  5. Not in favor of minimum wage at all, let alone raising the federal minimum (or state).

  6. Servers don't make minimum wage. They make $2.13 an hour.

  7. I don't know that God dictates wages either.

  8. If First Reformed can be nominated for Best Original Screenplay, despite being a near carbon copy of Winter Light, Hurricane Billy can call his film whatever the fuck he wants. I don't remember the exact quote but his stance was similar to "You don't call The Wizard of Oz a remake."

  9. Part of what he also means, as I've heard him say it, is that the characters are based on Treasure of the Sieera Madre, and The Wages of Fear similarities are more surface level.

  10. Fans. You need several, oscillating, fans. As others have noted, windows/curtains closed during the day, open at night. Have the fans situated so that air is pulled in from one side of the wohnung and blown out the other (preferably the way that the wind is blowing.

  11. Howard actually conceived Conan while in the Texas hill country on the Llano Estacado. I grew up in Cimmeria.

  12. Babbage’s — the first dedicated video game store (the first one near me anyway)

  13. I can't believe that I had to scroll this far to find Babbage's. I was a Comodore 64 kid. Fist game that I got there was Ultima II in 1982. Many nights were consumed dungeon crawling making pen and paper maps to find my way back out.

  14. I always love how it's my uber conservative acquaintances who keep posting this on Facebook, but they're also the ones keeping the clowns in office that are in bed with Pearson. I teach high school (non-tested subject), and was talking at length with our campus testing coordinator (her office is just around the corner from my class) about the insane communications they've been getting this year regarding opting out, rights, etc...

  15. Cambrian has the STAAR contract. They only subcontract the scoring to Pearson. The human part, anyway. The rest is handled in house

  16. ‘92 was the reason I re-registered as Republican. Too many sketchy things in the Clinton clan were being brought up.

  17. Agreed on the latter. I voted for Nader after regretting my 92 vote.

  18. *sound exchange was a record store located in the building with the Daniel Johnston mural that later housed Baja Fresh (my era) and Thai How Are You and I don’t know what else.

  19. It pains me that you had to spell this out. Off to the old man corner.

  20. When you don't need an ID to vote, does it matter?

  21. https://www.sos.state.tx.us/elections/vr/index.shtml

  22. Texas is not the only state that has undocumented immigrants.

  23. I'm aware, but it's both 1) Where I live and 2) Not the only state that purges voter rolls (they all do. See the linked section 16).

  24. I've always said Clinton was to blame. It, and the dot com give away plus encouraging everyone to go to college (accruing a mountain of debt), were horrible policy decisions that haunt us to this day. And why I voted for Nader in '96.

  25. I deal way more with 13-15 year old girls addicted to their phones and social media than I do consoling them over the potentiality of a mass shooter situation.

  26. Mental health aside (and in no way implying that we're not near crisis level), I'm on the front lines and have seen a, beyond precipitous, drop in literacy and critical thinking since 2008. There's little chance that there isn't a correlation with screens.

  27. Idk things just hit me, I just feel so out of touch with things nowadays. I just hit a revelation that I'm getting older now. I can see my era slowly fading, it's coming to an end soon. My era is culturally irrelevant now. I just feel like I just need to step aside and let the new kids take over.

  28. You are, quite literally, in the middle of your era. You'll look back on your 20s likely more than any other decade.

  29. That’s super cool! I’ve seen two of this guy’s trolls, one in the Christiania neighborhood in Copenhagen, and another in Breckenridge, Colorado.

  30. He just finished a new troll in Austin last week.

  31. This is interesting to me, because I'm a tad draconian on personal responsibility.

  32. Could you expand on your last sentence? The first half sounds a bit like classical Stoicism, but I don't understand what the inversion means.

  33. Definitely not a stoic. Sometimes the way we think, versus the way we live is different. I've done addiction interventions. I've housed homeless people fror months , years, at a time.

  34. I’ve always been a Republican and then I started leaning a little bit to the center, but once I came on here and went to the hundreds if not thousands of different subs and I saw what the left really stands for, that made up my mind. I have nothing in common in general with the left. Reviews are so outrageous and extreme, but there is no way I could have anything in common with that.

  35. I don't find reddit indicative of real life. If you looked at my city's sub you'd think that I live in a cesspool of depravity where it takes two hours to drive a block and everyone's been ruffied. But I'm sitting peacefully on my porch, some yard crews concert of leaf blowers my only, minor, annoyance.

  36. My lord! I need more coffee (and less beer).

  37. American remakes of foreign language films. They're always inferior. Most remakes, really. Why remake Pscho? If you want to redo a film, pick a bad one with a good conceit.

  38. I actually really liked Let Me In, though I confess I haven't seen the original.

  39. Nobody has mentioned Snake Farm by Ray Wylie Hubbard yet?

  40. Just caught Ray last Thursday at C-Boys. Still slaying it.
