The US doesn't have a concept of excess liters of fuel or charge than what is shown on the gauge/display like a lot of other countries do, so when your tank/battery shows empty, it is indeed empty, and not pretending to be to get you to rush to the pump/charging station.

VTSAX averaged 11.3% the past decade. Take 2.4% for inflation. $130k at 8.9% for 10 years is $316,532.51.

Manufacturers actually know some people like to push it as far as they can before refueling, and set the gauge to display empty at ~10%.
