I remember reading somewhere that it does depend on region. But I'm not sure if it differs between the EU and the USA (where most of these '2053-54' answers seem to come from), and how both of them differ from the rest of the world on this.
This is as a result of the English translation. In 1971, when Cigars Of The Pharaoh was translated into English, the translators were using the ‘translation order’ timeline. That is, the order in which they were translated, starting with King Ottokar’s Sceptre and The Crab With The Golden Claws with the most recent entry being 1968’s Flight 714. The books were listed in this order on the back.
The new translations by Farr are a complete mess. Even the translated text itself is pretty bad, and many of the wordplay-based jokes make no sense. Check out the sequence in 'Explorers on the Moon' in which Calculus explains where they are going to land. That is a particularly messed-up example.
Until at least a couple years ago, B&W reprints of Tintin in America, Cigars of the Pharaoh and The Blue Lotus (in English) were quite readily available brand new, though they were probably left over from an older print batch. I don't know if those stocks have run out.
Are the prequels better than the sequels? Both have issues but the prequels are straight garbage. Phantom menace and attack of the clones aren’t just bad star wars movies but just terrible movies in general and i’d only put rise of skywalker from the sequels there with them. And Revenge of the sith isn’t much better
IMO prequels > sequels by an extremely long shot. 1 & 2 were shitty in large portions but I appreciated that they at least told major portions of the story told in the OG series. 7,8,9 to me seemed like a bunch of flashy special effects and new characters that had nothing to do with the larger story, it all felt sort of like a badly conceived strawman that they built up from scratch and pulled down very quickly.
I'd guess it must be a misprint. Both my 1983 copy and my 1984 paperback copy have the usual colours, though my 1983 copy is also a misprint in that the portraits at the end of the book are upside down. That's an interesting copy you have I think! Is the rest of it also like that?
Yes, most of the book seems to have this printing style defect. It is more stark on some pages (attached above) than on others. I found this copy going for a little over a dollar, and obviously didn't have to think twice about keeping it. Piqued my curiosity because, like I said, I haven't seen this sort of thing in a Methuen edition before. Would love to take a look at the defect in your copy!
I think you'd get better help if you could be more specific about your feedback. The Killing Joke is also by Alan Moore, so it may be a better point of comparison. Where do you feel it fell short?
Because after a point, it messes with the characterisation of Batman as a quasi-mythical, secretive figure which helps with darker & grittier storytelling. I do think the Nolan movies reinforced that a fair bit among many fans. I like many instances of the Batman-Robin (or Batman-Nightwing) two-person team in the comics, and although we haven't seen any great movie adaptations of it, I think it could still be done without upsetting fans of the aforementioned portrayal. I personally think more than two starts to take away from it, and more than three gets just plain boring. (Not counting Alfred.)
The Ventriloquist is one of my absolute favourite Batman characters too, but ultimately I like him being a minor/supporting character. I would possibly be bummed if he were rewritten into a more 'important' one.

I dont know, I always saw so much more potencial in that character and I'm always sad that he never became more.
