The hinges were just so bad it was unusable. Computer lasted a solid 3.5 or so years. My brother had the other, so I just got his when he bought a new one. Until the hinge cables are damaged, it should keep working, bur you need to be INCREDIBLY gentle

That's a good idea. I'd also recommend, if you're handy (or have friends who are), 3d print or make out of wood something to hold the hinges stable. Especially if you're going to make it a desktop machine. Gl!

Any structural tube grade will do, they are all equally stiff. Any design that is adequately stiff should be strong enough, barring eventual fatigue failures. Wherever you buy will likely have 1018 or 1020, both fine.

Wall thickness is fine, but structure will flex a lot unless well triangulated in all 3 dimensions (so pyramid-ated?)
