On top of the reasons people have already listed, I can think of at least one more: Pokémon was literally designed to be a very social IP, considering the games - which were relatively simple RPGs, a popular genre to begin with - were released on portable consoles that people could bring with them and show off to other people, and the games encouraged socializing with the trading and battling mechanics.
Food for thought: at one point during the True Ending of Re;Birth2, Neptune says the phrase "Jeezum Crow", which is a euphemism for "Jesus Christ". Make of that what you will.
