It might be a bit off topic, but as a European living in the UK I will say this. If the brits overhear you talking to someone in a different language they will instantly ask you if you’re from Poland.
Agreed, on both parts. Instead of celebrating it, we make it look like some dumb, outdated, boring pile of crap. And our folklore is so vibrant and robusty, it's a real pity we have no idea how to sell it.
Because christianity dimnished it over thousands of years. Christianity does not tolerate other beliefs, while buddhism does, and it just mixed with shinto into shinto-buddhism in Japan.
This IMO applies to the entire Slavic folklore. Nordics can sell their mythology and folklore to the point it's absolutely everywhere. Slavic people in general mostly just ridicule theirs.
Japanese folklore is much more rich and documented. Our folklore has been dimished so much people don't know anything about it. Even our pagan pantheon was most likely made up in the XIX century.
We're just as fine, although we just don't value ourselves enough — that is in comparison to how we've already earned it. It's oftentimes either nationalism or unjustified shame — too little in between, I suppose. There are things even that we're better at — and those we're catching up at marvelously. And we don't at some others — and we don't always really have to. In varietate concordia!
As an Indian staying in Krakow for four months, I have had a positive experience. The only thing I knew about Poland during my childhood days was from my Uncle, who is from Jamnagar; he showed me the Balachadi camp, where many Polish refugees stayed in India during WWII, hosted by Maharaja Jam Saheb
For some more authentic polish "fast food" like zapiekanki try "kumpiry" and "maczanka" you can get both in Kazimierz, enjoy your stay and don't get scammed at the main square market their prices are insane.
Wow, it's awesome to hear so many great things about my country and fellow Poles. I'm really happy that you have such a positive experience of staying here and that you have met some nice and helpful people. I wish you the rest of your time here is as good or even better and that pierogi will positively surprise you. 💜 Thank you for your kind words. 😊
After travelling a bit i always say that Poland has a complex of a poor and uncivilised cousin. While we may still not have as much money we are very well above the average level of politeness, cleanliness, behavior and overall social interactions.
We have amazing history and culture but we really lack on a global scale of selling it. People, especially now, love learning about interesting aspects of culture and places and rather than trying to "fit in", Poland should be proud to display it's unique culture, traditions, and history.
Do you know of any documentaries or so that I could watch about the interesting aspects of Polish culture? (I'm Dutch and for some reason Reddit keeps recommending the Polish subreddit to me, but I have no real connection to you all! Except for wishing you good luck in the game against France. I've bet €10 on Poland :)
I am not from Poland, tho I totally agree with you unless you be authentic, no body is gonna buy. People who know polish culture/history should kind of start internet pages/comics describing things. World will have to listen once you guys take it seriously.
No żesz kurwa! Zamawiasz pierogi - KOPEREK. Zamawiasz bigos - KOPEREK. Jakieś kurwa burrito - KOPEREK. Naleśniki z dżemem - NO KURWA KOPEREK. No to mówię, że PRZEPRASZAM ALE ZAMAWIALEM BEZ KOPERKU, a ona A FAKTYCZNIE PRZEPRASZAM. O, albo to. Wiele traum koperkowych spotkało mnie u babci. NO KURWA KOPEREK. Najczęstsza sytuacja: Otwieram zamrażarkę, widzę pudełko waniliowych lodów luksusowej firmy lodziarskiej - mmmm mniam. Moje ulubiene. Otwieram, A TAM KURWA KOPEREK. ...... NO ALE PRZECIEŻ WIDZĘ ŻE KOPERKOWA. I babcia wtedy NO BO CO MIAŁAM ZROBIĆ JAK MIAŁAM KOPERKU TROSZKĘ? Ech... Albo jeszcze ZJEDZ. TU TYLKO TROSZKĘ KOPERKU JEST. W OGÓLE NIE CZUĆ. No to, za przeproszeniem, uczciwszy uszy, PO JAKĄ KURWĘ GO DODAWAĆ, SKORO GO NIE CZUĆ?! A nóż w serce został mi wbity jak babcia zrobiła swoje słynne pierogi ruskie i dodała koperek do farszu. Płakałem przez miesiąc... No. Czyli ogólnie koperek jest chujowy, jebać koperek, chce żeby umarł.
My unpopular opinion is that I'm glad I was born here and not in the west, despite all of our STATE flaws. I don't really have any positive feelings towards our state, but the country I love.
As someone who studied German and polish history in schools (went to a German school full time and a polish bi weekly), I find our history so fascinating. Like imagine surviving 123 years without being on the map of Europe. And then, between 1918 and 1933 and between 1933-45 with all these awful things happening and yet we managed to have a rulership in London, going into underground...
Polish food doesn't really have anything that's considered fast food and is not easily adoptable because it takes time to cook and it's usually made of good quality ingredients. Also the food that we can adopt, we didn't figure it out how to "sell it" as fast food. Zapiekanki or kiełbasa or pierogi sure, but it's not as wildly adopted as the hot dog or kebab.
Idk as a Czech I think we have too fatty foods that are very heavy and because of that not very popular. I think you may be having similar problem, maybe not
People from nordics or uk have opinions about poles based on dumb stereotyp or a few bad people who they think represent the entire country. DangerousTruck drivers or thief cleaners or football criminals. We can of course also blame the media for publishing bullshit also.
I live in Poland but I am in Stockholm right now and I have to say that polish cities are nicer and people are just the same. Tho I feel safer in Poland.
It is the same as with many other immigrants from any other country. The ones that decide to change their country of live are usually not highly skilled professionals. Therefore it is not a truthful representation of the entire population. It is not the stereotype, it is simply based on those whom they have met.
Our cousine is tasty. Ans it is unpopular, I have comparsion from Sri lankan, Thai,Cambodian,Viet, and neear east kitchen. We have really good cousine, and a lot of tastes.
Unpopular opinion? It would be that Polish people are smart, intuitive & quick witted. I ( 42M ) grew up through elementary/middle/high school with daily or at least weekly 'dumb pollock' jokes. 15 years ago I married a girl born & raised in Poland, and I can tell you my experience over the years visiting the country and being among all of my wifes friends, they are without a doubt some of the smartest, most intuitive & quick witted people on this planet.
Welcome to the vodka Paradise! ... That was the title.of a trip a couple.of.polish friends organized for some friends from all around the world. Things I found out about Poland i didn't know ,( I knew nothing)
I think the second one would be the least popular. I don't know many Latinoamericans, but they ones I know are much more cheerful, chilled-out and easy-going than Poles.
A lot of good Polish folk/neo-folk music. Kapela ze Wsi Warszawa, Kapela Maliszow etc. Polish Jazz is fantastic—really talented artists like Laboratorium, Komeda, Urbaniak, Stanko, Sojka. A lot of other names like Czeslaw Niemen come to mind. If you of course mean present-day music, I can't say much in defense of it.
Mainstream music trying to mimic global trends sucks hard, but there are some alternative artists that are absolutely amazing. As somebody mentioned already, Mela Koteluk is great, Sorry Boys make some decent music as well, but I think what our music scene does best is collabs with new projects like Męslie Granie as well as some modern things with this one being among my all time favorites:
The poor self esteem. Poland has developed magnificently in the past three decades. It is a state worth respect and admiration, I hope the locals realize this soon.
I prefer dumplings with fruits over any other. Every time I say to someone that I don't like dumplings with meat (or just something salty) they're like "wHaT!?!".
I'm from Poland and don't eat dumplings so often like foreigners think we eat them, but with meat are more nutritious, personally prefer dumplings with whie cottage (cheese) and cream and sugar on it, try next time :)
Our history, culture and cousine is forgotten. Today's Polish cuisine is mainly dishes from the 19th century, from the time of the partitions. There were no potatoes. We forgot about old Polish cuisine, traditions and history. Today, most of the Polish history taught at school is the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries, martyrdom and pretending to be a victim, or a few famous victories from other times, such as the Battle of Grunwald, Vienna or Warsaw, we forget about the old days. Mainly because of the partitions and communism, saying that Poles are stupid and have achieved nothing. We learn about the Vikings in history books, but there is no mention of the brave Pomeranians (Chąśnica) spreading fear and destruction in the Baltic Sea. There is no mention of beautiful Polish castles and palaces, e.g. one of the largest palaces in the world is Krzyżtopór (it is bigger than Versailles). And then the west makes fun of us and thinks we are stupid peasants and cunts that everyone rapes
Sad but true. Our wartime history is so epic and still there are so many events that weren't transfered to a big screen. So many great people and their stories. For example, I would like to watch a movie about defense of Hel, but I know that if it was of Polish production, it would be just a waste of time. We sucks at epic movies.
Poland is better than Switzerland and don't give me the bias explanation I'm a double citizen, lived in both and I'm still traveling between them and it's just nicer for the family here
My last will will be to be buried in a big pierog. The dough must come from the same manufacturer who produce pierogi for zabka. This must preserve my body for scientists.
Building airports in every voivodship was dumb. I don't understand how in such small country taking a flight can be better than getting on high speed train. And pandemics made it even worse in economic conditions. Lublin's airport is really a ghost town most of the time. Imagine taking your car near the airport to have fun with it and drift because there's no traffic there xD
L opnion. Travelling to different parts of a country directly is much better than travelling to one part and then taking a train to the part you need to get to. If that's your only gripe then you must hate every other European country. Why fly to Frankfurt am if you can fly to Köln and then take a train to Frankfurt, why would you possibly need two airports?
we have a great language and we could get our culture really widespread like korean culture but sadly we don’t know how to sell it. also poland not using euro is really doing them good
i think its pretty popular but not many people talk about it, polish people are the one who love and hate their country the most they love hating on it but when someone from another country says a bad word they become the biggest Poland defenders ever
Polish men are bad at queueing. It doesn't matter how long the line very obviously is - if there is a gap, they will take it and pretend they didn't see/you don't exist. I am from Canada and we are arguably number one at queueing. The UK gives us a run for our money in this category but this is a hill I am prepared to die on.
Traditional polish food is bland and not worth the calories. I never understand why everyone I meet tells me the love the 2-5 things they have eaten that's Polish. They're allergic to flavor. My mom thinks pepperoni on pizza is too spicy. Gtfoh.
Im not particualrily religous but i majorly disagree with this one. You think the first time nepotism and pedophila was a problem in the church was during JPII? This is a problem that has plagued the church for centruries, maybe JPII is the first one that had to deal with the media storm and yes, he avoided accountability and responsibility for it, but it didnt "start in the times of JPII" as you say. Additionally, he is often seen as a reviver of catholic faith among young people across the world. Some even credit his visit to poland as one of the catalysts for the fall of communism. To say he was "terrible" is really farfetched when comparing him to popes that came before him and even after.
Totally agree. From outside, Polish Catholicism is seen as some of the most borderline zealotry in the religion, and pretty damn backwards regarding social justice, which is already quite something to say, coming from Mediterranean Catholicism. It's like it has a waaay bigger number of priests that weaponize the faith, compared to just being somewhat chill and letting stuff flow (of course, we do have zealots too, but they're not seen as a normal thing).
Polish Catholicism should be the Gold standard. And JP2 was a great Pope. One of the best. The Church right now don't even have a proper Pope. Benedict tried to absolve himself of all responsibilities of a Pope while Francis can never be the actual Pope as long as Benedict is alive. That's why he cannot wear them drippy red Pope shoes. I think you're forgetting what a Pope is... That is, God's representative on Earth. Someone that quits is definitely not a good representative, and then someone that goes against God's teachings is DEFINITELY NOT any representative of God. Francis can be summarised perfectly by Maxwell from Hellsing Ultimate Abridged.
Your government which consists mostly of religious fanatics is running your beautiful country into the ground but I don't think that's an unpopular opinion.
If you make it like my mom does, 100%. If you jazz it up, use different fillings and flavorings, then they're good. The problem is, traditionally, pierogi are bland and not worth the calories. Mashed potatoes, the most basic ass kind of mashed potatoes, no fancy stuff, can be way better.
Our Fantasy and Sci-Fi writers are trash; Former ones as people especially and are projecting a lot of that onto the paper. Thus the stories are so so, even the Witcher, in my opinion, became a hit only because it's just the first mix of polish folklore with the dark fantasy genre.
Its late at night and my brain is barely here but honestly Poland really gatekeeps itself by not having anything in english. No one knows your history or anything cause its not offered in english. So thanks for this sub existing ♡
Let me tell you a little secret. Pierogi, empenadas, raviolis, are the same fucking shit. Lets agree that we make the same fucking food everywhere. I am a Trekkie tho so everybody knows. Humans are wanderers since day one, and shit like borders will definetly influence future evolution.
You might as well say that there is no German, Swiss, Austrią, Latvian, Lithuanian, Ukrainian, Belarusian, Swedish, Norwegian Finnish, Russian, Czech, Slovak, Danish, etc. cuisine
My unpopular opinion: I personally love Zakopane. I love everything about it even though I realize that most od things sold in Krupówki is cheap Chinese crap, cheese is not always genuine and town is overcrowded. I love it for any other reason and Tatry are great. I’m in a position that thankfully I can afford vacation basically anywhere in the world yet I choose Zakopane and Tatry because I feel like I belong there. It’s kind of my place on Earth.
"We're alright"
Yup. I've never heard that one, especially from a native.
It might be a bit off topic, but as a European living in the UK I will say this. If the brits overhear you talking to someone in a different language they will instantly ask you if you’re from Poland.
Lol, I didn't know that 🤣
I’m American born Polish so I know nothing… why do so many Polish people flock to UK?
That’s untrue in my experience. Perhaps if they hear you speaking Polish, then they ask because they think it is.
Polish folklore is on the same level as Japanese folklore but sadly we don't know how to "sell it"
Agreed, on both parts. Instead of celebrating it, we make it look like some dumb, outdated, boring pile of crap. And our folklore is so vibrant and robusty, it's a real pity we have no idea how to sell it.

What’s the best way to explore Polish folklore
Do you have any preferred (English language) sources? I would love to learn more but am not sure where to begin
Because christianity dimnished it over thousands of years. Christianity does not tolerate other beliefs, while buddhism does, and it just mixed with shinto into shinto-buddhism in Japan.

Well most of Polish paganism was destroyed by Catholic church maybe that's why
We just did.
Japanese folklore is much more rich and documented. Our folklore has been dimished so much people don't know anything about it. Even our pagan pantheon was most likely made up in the XIX century.
Yeah. Not many people realize that samurai wher pedophiles buttfucking their apprentices. Its all about how you sell it.
I would love some recommendations of Polish folklore in media if anyone has any! All I have is a rudimentary understanding of Baba Yaga.

Being polish (born in UK). It’s dill. Dill seems to go on everything! I even had a pasta once in Warsaw and they put dill in it!

The polish people are honest with people from others country's
I am a Romanian living in Gdansk for 3 months now. I have everything I want in Poland and even more.
My unpopular opinion is that I'm glad I was born here and not in the west, despite all of our STATE flaws. I don't really have any positive feelings towards our state, but the country I love.

Interesting, I never thought of that. But yeah, if you think about traditional Polish food, then even soups require some time to prepare.
Idk as a Czech I think we have too fatty foods that are very heavy and because of that not very popular. I think you may be having similar problem, maybe not
Have you ever heard of chleb ze smalcem
I don't agree with that opinion at all:
But i see this as a plus, and it should be other countries adopting your customs in this regard
Good quality ingredients? flour. Potatoes. Cabbage.
It's caught on in certain parts of the US(like Pennsylvania and Ohio)
I love poland

fish dishes on wigilia. I don’t it fish in general so the food on 24th is always sad for me

I think Polish music sucks. That's about my most negative opinion of the place (besides the politics at the moment).
A lot of good Polish folk/neo-folk music. Kapela ze Wsi Warszawa, Kapela Maliszow etc. Polish Jazz is fantastic—really talented artists like Laboratorium, Komeda, Urbaniak, Stanko, Sojka. Poland is a powerhouse of extreme metal, other than that yea. If you're talking modern polish music ofc.
Mainstream music trying to mimic global trends sucks hard, but there are some alternative artists that are absolutely amazing. There’s some decent indie music if you get lucky enough to find it. I recommend Mela Koteluk, also The Dumplings have some good tunes.
Yeah, new music sucks. However, there a few old but good rock classics that are really good IMHO. Try old Budka Suflera albums for example.
Grubson doesn’t give you the feels?
Sanah is awesome
Behemoth, Vader, Percival?
Frédéric Chopin???
Behemoth doesn't suck... Yes that's the only Polish band I listen to 🤘
We are more eastern than western actually.
I'm polish-ukrainian living in the states (used to live in Podkarpacie) and I would have to agree. Podlasie & Podkarpacie are especially eastern.
As a lower silesian person I must personally disagree
agreed
Oooh, this one is tough. I don't know what to think about it. I guess we try to be more Western, but there is still a long way before us.
When you look at it geographically, Poland is only eastern if you don't consider Russia to be a part of the Europe.
Polish customer service doesn’t exist. It’s not my problem so our company doesn’t care about it.
the more western poland becomes, the fatter the people
Polish cities are one of the best in Europe
I absolutely DREAD onions, rosół, łazanki to name a few things "all Poles unanimously love"
Finally someone that understands what an unpopular opinion means.
I also dread all of the above. 🤣
The poor self esteem. Poland has developed magnificently in the past three decades. It is a state worth respect and admiration, I hope the locals realize this soon.
Warsaw old town look good
I prefer dumplings with fruits over any other. Every time I say to someone that I don't like dumplings with meat (or just something salty) they're like "wHaT!?!".
Unpopular, but I agree. Cherry dumplings are best.
I'm from Poland and don't eat dumplings so often like foreigners think we eat them, but with meat are more nutritious, personally prefer dumplings with whie cottage (cheese) and cream and sugar on it, try next time :)
Warsaw is so overrated.
Polish cuisine is desperately in need of Mexican chile.
Lovely people & very hard working, but why do they always buy German cars like Merc/BMW/Audi then drive like they don't know how to drive?
I hate Gołabki
Same
So much
I don't get everyone's obsession with all kinds of cabbage and mayo...
Cabbage with mayo sounds really bad.
Sałatka jarzynowa is overrated.
I will fight you on that. 🤣 But my husband is also not a fan of sałatka jarzynowa.
Omg so I'm not the only one, everyone who I know loves sałatka jarzynowa, but I just cannot stand this mix with mayo and a lots of vegetables
Omg yes, straigt up disgusting
Poland have one of the worst war movies and Polish comics practicly doesn't exist even in Poland
Sad but true. Our wartime history is so epic and still there are so many events that weren't transfered to a big screen. So many great people and their stories. For example, I would like to watch a movie about defense of Hel, but I know that if it was of Polish production, it would be just a waste of time. We sucks at epic movies.
That smalec is not just food, but that it's actually good.
Quite often a meat 'lot' from shops is revoked sue to bacterial contamination, it is from Poland so i refuse to buy any meat from there.
Flaczki are delicious despite how the dish looks
Poland is better than Switzerland and don't give me the bias explanation I'm a double citizen, lived in both and I'm still traveling between them and it's just nicer for the family here
Nice to hear that. 💜
Zupa pomidorowa is one of the worlst soups ever. Everyone around me seems to like it tho 🤷♂️
I love it, one of the best soups for me. I know maybe one person who shares the same resentment as you, so it's a really unpopular opinion. 😁
Poland did a lot in WW2 even after their capitulation they never surrendered and their resistance lasted until the USSR”liberated” them.
Pierogi would be better if not that thick layer of flavorless dough. Make it thinner!! more filling, less bulka!!
Home-made pierogi can be as thin as you want (or can do). Store-bought or even in the restaurants - too much dough - always :/
Lots of workplace Karens
Indeed.
Really in in Poland? Rip
we have a great language and we could get our culture really widespread like korean culture but sadly we don’t know how to sell it. also poland not using euro is really doing them good
Can't see what about Polish culture is easily marketable to teen girls that fawn over boy bands, honestly.
Remember to sort by controversial!
kotlet mielony >>>>> kotlet schabowy
It's not all that bad over here, could be worse
i think its pretty popular but not many people talk about it, polish people are the one who love and hate their country the most they love hating on it but when someone from another country says a bad word they become the biggest Poland defenders ever
Our tax system sucks.
The most obvious one: sernik is better with raisins than without
Oh yes, this one. One I absolutely cannot agree with. HOWEVER the raisin one is defo better than candied orange peel one.
Well that's like your opinion ma'am.
SERNIK IS FUCKIN SERNIK... It does not matter, if there are raisins, orange sking or pineapple in it, it is delicious. I will die on this hill.
One word: WRONG!
Gołąbki suck and I don’t want them anywhere near me
Polish men are bad at queueing. It doesn't matter how long the line very obviously is - if there is a gap, they will take it and pretend they didn't see/you don't exist. I am from Canada and we are arguably number one at queueing. The UK gives us a run for our money in this category but this is a hill I am prepared to die on.

I love Poland but it is slowly regressing into an authoritarian state
I bet a lot of you predditors really hate that we’re homogenous lmao.
Traditional polish food is bland and not worth the calories. I never understand why everyone I meet tells me the love the 2-5 things they have eaten that's Polish. They're allergic to flavor. My mom thinks pepperoni on pizza is too spicy. Gtfoh.
Are sourkraut, gherkins, żurek, horseradish bland for you?
I kind of agree, especially on the calories part. Too heavy, too meaty. I prefer something lighter and "fresh-tasting".
Most of the people in Polish society are frickin' annoying.
That's popular opinion
Now just imagine. Polish people these days are basically an MDMA-fueled cuddle puddle compared to what I remember, growing up in the 80s
Yes.
That’s a polish way of going throughout the day, beneath this layer lie good people, who will rush to help you without a second thought.
Polish Catholic Church is a shame even for Catholics from other countries.
Bigos sucks…and judging by how many others have said this here it’s not REALLY an unpopular opinion but so do gołabki.
Your government which consists mostly of religious fanatics is running your beautiful country into the ground but I don't think that's an unpopular opinion.
Maybe not on reddit but in real life certainly
Sour pickles are overrated.
How dare you?!😮
OMG nooo, sour pickles are life. 🤣 Another good one.
That's it, face the wall. Now.
Half-sour!!!!! Perfect!
Blasphemy!
Pierogi are overrated and Poles aren't more honest than other nations.
Agreed on the second part, but pierogi... I just love pierogi lol.
Pierogi are overrated
cheese pierogis arent that great
How dare you?! Nothing beats a good portion of pierogi z kaczką!
Really? And you wouldn't change your mind even for fried pierogi with some delicious, full of flavor, filling?
Cannot agree on that, but I know where you are coming from. It's the same with pasta in Italy for me.
Ravioli without sauce
For real! You know someone knows nothing about Poland when they mention pierogi. There’s so much better food here.
Polish food is not particularly healthy as nearly everything is fried in one way or another...
Pierogi aren't really that good
Our Fantasy and Sci-Fi writers are trash; Former ones as people especially and are projecting a lot of that onto the paper.
Pierogi are really overrated
😱
Let me tell you a little secret. Pierogi, empenadas, raviolis, are the same fucking shit. Lets agree that we make the same fucking food everywhere. I am a Trekkie tho so everybody knows. Humans are wanderers since day one, and shit like borders will definetly influence future evolution.
pierogi are mid
😳
There is no polish cuisine.
You might as well say that there is no German, Swiss, Austrią, Latvian, Lithuanian, Ukrainian, Belarusian, Swedish, Norwegian Finnish, Russian, Czech, Slovak, Danish, etc. cuisine
Some of the current youth 10-16 and maybe I'd even throw in 16-early 20s are extremely articulate in regards to foreigners.
Pomidorówka isn't that good
My unpopular opinion: I personally love Zakopane.
Polish history is interesting af!!! Polish Lithuanian Commonwealth, Golden age, politics, art, first european constitution, wars, Napoleon
We're fine just the way we are.
