Metro North is a commuter railroad with 5 lines and commuter headways. A better comparison would be Thalys which carried 6.5 million passengers in 2022, on a very high-demand route with transit oriented cities. In that context Brightline achieving the equivalent of 2 million per year is remarkable
I don't even think the Acela qualifies as high speed by US standards
The Acela isn't as bad as it's often made out to be. It might not have an eye-catching max speed, but in terms of average speed it's as fast as many of the famous european alternatives. The Eurostar has a top speed of 300 km/h, but it only averages 140 km/h. And ultimately it's average speed/ travel time that makes HSR competitive.
