The signal leg has to be processed by a microcontroller as per the manufacture's cut sheet. The input to the microcontroller generates an output from the microprocessor to a transistor's base (like a TIP120) that can handle the voltage and Amperage required by the coil requirements of the relay.

You are looking at the design backwards. Always look at the load and design from there. Let's say a motor. The motor pulls 1/2 amp at 12vdc. First load. 2nd load is the coil of the relay. Relay specs are 12 vdc at 120ma to o[erate the coil. This means that you need to switch a load from the control electronics that can handle the load size. A transistor can handle this load (like a NPN TIP120).
