This tech is probably the closest we'll be able to get to "free" energy. If we can get this up-and-running in even a halfway economically-viable way, it'll rank up there as one of the most important inventions in human history.
The sad thing is, we already have enough uranium for nuclear fission reactors to last us longer than the extinction of the human race with the use of breeder reactors. Fusion is cool, but fission is already essentially unlimited energy, and is a lot less complicated than fusion (though more dangerous I'll admit). Yet we continue to shut down fission power plants and reopen coal (looking at you, Germany).
