Thank so much for taking time out of your day to respond to me. I see all your points and agree with you; I was just using that example if I really needed money at any time in my life. I hope to be able to just let it grow undisturbed until I’m 59.5 years old. My last question had to do with what you were saying about how I could save myself the fee and just do my own research and index funds, but I already have started with a financial advisor and didn’t know if I could just transfer ownership of the account fully to myself. It might be “easier to just cash out” even though taxes with hurt. If you have any more advice input is really appreciated. Thank you again for all your help so far!
You dont have to cash out. You can just end your contract with your advisor (they arent going to like this and some have been known to guilt people and honestly, maybe its good to stay with someone till you are fully confident, maybe open another roth or trad somewhere else?), they (advisors) normally charge quarterly or yearly but you can break at any time, normally. You can transfer your retirement accounts to any brokerage and again, its not considered a cash out Just moving from one place to another. Just pick one (brokerage), open the same type (roth or trad) there, then they all have automated systems to reach out and pull it over into the new account in a couple days. Now no fees. Call the brokerage if you need help. thats it, money transfered to you new account, with you in full control. Im an advisor btw...
I see it makes sense that an advisor controlled Roth would still act as any other retirement account, such as a job 401k, that can be rolled over. I will probably stay with my financial advisor for a while, but I was just wondering if I wanted to have my independent retirement Roth if I could.
401ks are opened by an employer, but can be rolled into a trad once you leave, it will be an account type change at that point, less restrictive but lower contributions eligible. The transfer I talked about isn't a rollover. Just called a rransfer. Yea.. you would just open a trad or Roth to act as a container if you ever wanted to transfer. Remember the contributions to trad or Roth are limited to your yearly totals across all accounts. 401ks are totally separate and don't affect your contribution totals you make to trad or Roth. Probably best to make a post if you have a question, hopefully help others out!
