1. Look up "liquid skin" or "new skin". Stings like heck going on but pretty amazing protection, especially if you put on more than one layer. I've always found trying to over-protect blisters just makes them worse, not better. Good luck.

  2. I have an engineering degree from the PSU EMS college. I enjoyed the experience and was happy being part of a smaller community and not being in the college of engineering. The first 2 years of classes are usually the same anyway. As far as job placement goes, my impressions have been that a PSU degree is more respected on the east coast and west coast than Purdue, while the Midwest it would be Purdue. So maybe think about where you eventually hope to live/work. No future employer will care what college at the university your degree came from. For sure if you graduate at the top of your class from either school you will get a great job. If you are last in your class, maybe not…. Sort of a side consideration, but even if the travel time is about the same, if you have to fly to get home you will do it much less frequently (but maybe that’s a good thing?). Both are great schools and you can’t go wrong either way. Congratulations and good luck!

  3. How about a native grape variety or a cultivar like concord? Grows fast, provides shade, and food.

  4. I don't know where you're located, but the UC Davis plant sale always has some and for a reasonable price. The next sale is April 7.

  5. It can happen almost anywhere if it’s hot enough.

  6. On many panniers, you can adjust the contact points. You may be able to slide the frame hooks forward a few inches, effectively moving the bag backwards. That’s often enough to fix the problem. Not sure about your brand though.

  7. Are you sure you removed the washer when you removed the crank bolt?

  8. Definitely not a dandelion. Probably some variety of sow thistle.

  9. Everybody likes a different look, but I think they look great. If you try to move them, you’ll end up killing them. Maybe thin out a few of the taller branches over the course of a few years. I would also let them grow a little more naturally instead of trimming them like a hedge.

  10. Low spoke count wheels can be quite strong, that's not really the issue. The issue is if/when a spoke does break, you will be unlikely to adequately true them enough to continue riding. That means you would be stuck right where you are. In the bad old days, that was a huge problem. Today you could probably call an Uber or equivalent and get a lift. Tough call but sometimes you just have to use what you got.

  11. If OP has disc brakes, a broken spoke is less of an issue than with rim brakes.

  12. Maybe…? Rubbing on the rim brake pad is bad but not a deal breaker. You can ride a long way like that (not fun though). It’s when the wheel hits the frame you’ve got big trouble. That’s a problem no matter what kind of brakes you have.

  13. The small school I went to didn’t have a cross country team, so a few friends and I got together and declared ourselves the team. We got some singlets from the track coach and would go to meets with open entry and just sign up. Nobody cared as long as we weren’t costing the school any money. I bet you could start a team, or least a “track club”, and do something similar.

  14. Are they properly registered? If not, call them in as abandoned vehicles. If they are, most cities have local rules about extended street parking, often limiting it to 72 hrs max. Call local parking enforcement to report them. Be nice about it when calling it in, they will be on your side but may not be able to do anything right away depending on city policy about warnings, etc. Keep calling though, like every few days.

  15. I’ve found that changing a tube before light is out could be very dangerous especially hanging out on the side of a road with a headlamp. That and the worry of making it to work on time (90 day probation periods and such). Looking for a stress free entrance into a potentially hectic morning commute.

  16. Good points, but you’ll end up waiting much longer for an Uber that it takes to fix a flat. Maybe look for tires designed to limit flats? They usually have a terrible ride though.

  17. Joy Division have an album with a famous cover of a series of lines with what seems like a range of mountains down the middle. (I think it’s actually an image of sound pulses). It’s an often used on band T-shirt’s. The joke is that this fan ironed his shirt and now all the mountains are flat. Google “Joy Division Unknown Pleasure T shirt”.

  18. We were there for a weekend a few springs ago where it rained on and off. We took raincoats and were outside most of the time, hiking, looking at flowers, etc. Rain in Death Valley is pretty rare and amazing, the sky, the smells, and the colors are all different. The chances of anything like the flash floods from last year are pretty small. I think you will enjoy it, although the forecast says it will be pretty cold so be prepared.

  19. Long shot but I’ll say Uneasy Rider” by Charlie Daniels.

  20. Well before Whitney, Marvin Gaye turned the national anthem into a soul ballad at the 1983 NBA All Star game. It was amazing.

  21. Try 99 Ranch market. Definitely not my thing but certainly unique.

  22. CA Penal Code 626.8 .... "(a) Any person who comes into any school building or upon any school ground, or street, sidewalk, or public way adjacent thereto, without lawful business thereon, and whose presence or acts interfere with the peaceful conduct of the activities of the school or disrupt the school or its pupils or school activities, is guilty of a misdemeanor...."

  23. Maybe you mean a neutron walks into a bar…..?

  24. Wisteria is a super fast grower. It’s likely it will be up and over that fence by the end of the year and into the sunshine. Maybe just wait it out…?

  25. Well…..no, not “technically the truth” at all. You need to consider what percentage of auto trips are actually made while drunk vs. the number of trips made while sober to have a meaningful statistical comparison. Unless you’re making a joke, in which case, good one!
