1. DNF'd my first 100miler at Grindstone this year. Rained for the majority of the time I was out there, and the rain was unrelenting. Feet were taped up nice, but I didn't give myself any slack to account for the moisture. So there was some nastiness with skin folding on itself, making it feel like I was being jabbed with a needle each step. Combined with the cold air setting in, it made for a tough slog.

  2. I’m like you and have 2-3 drinks a week. That’s usually a beer on Friday (as I can sleep in an extra 90mins on Saturday) and then 1-3 on Sunday after my long run, timed to my normal Monday rest day.

  3. A tad late but figured it might help some folks researching for spring 2022. Sidenote: I redid the trail in 2 days/1night this October but was too traumatized to write a proper trip report

  4. This is a great write up, and excellent to hear about the follow up trip. Was going to ask if this route is doable in 2 days (been researching my fastpacking options for the spring and summer part of ultra marathon training)

  5. I am also a perfectly average, unlikely to reach a podium runner and I have a coach. I hired her through CTS (trainright.com). The company is one of the largest endurance coaching outfits in the US. They have pretty solid standards for the education required of their coaches and provide ongoing training for them. When I first spoke with the company they had me fill out a survey and set me up with a few coaching interviews. My understanding is they will let you interview as many of their coaches as you want. They also have several payment tiers (I’m at the lowest tier at ~200/month). I’ve now been working with my coach for two years and I’ve been able to do many things that I’m certain I would not have done alone.

  6. Really appreciate this thoughtful post and thanks for mentioning CTS. While I love running, my knowledge of the broader community is pretty narrow. For context, I was looking at coaching from David Roche, or Jason Koop’s group (not Koop himself, seems $$$). Nice to hear of other options out there and avoid the grifter pitfalls mentioned.

  7. Hitting a 50 miler in AZ in March as well, Monument Valley. Curious to know how you are training for the weather and terrain. I'm in Texas.

  8. That’s what I’m heading too as well. Unfortunately I am coming from Canada, so opposite weather, and terrain. Right now I’m just laying down good solid weekly mileage and anticipate that to carry me. The biggest challenge here will be doing my best to avoid the comforts of staying indoors on the bike trainer for as long as I can.

  9. How much speed do you need for a 50 miler? It would be different if you were training for a half marathon or shorter.

  10. Super fair point on this one. I've been following a Phil Mosely training plan and luckily speed is only once a week, but this is great insight

  11. Further context...think around the time of The Editors as well. The album cover was black and white, sort of like the first Glasvegas record...if you recall!

  12. Label-wise I think it was an indie label that had reached mid-level status at the time. Maybe in the Secretly Canadian camp but not sure.

  13. Congrats on this ride! Definitely quite the feat, thanks for posting this!

  14. Definitely want to hear more about this! What was your set up like? Things to keep an eye out for (despite it being pretty safe, I'm notorious for choosing the wrong path if there is a fork, hah)?

  15. Real clusterfuck on my hands, standard scoring, need three:

  16. Basically a WR/Flex problem, thoughts on who to start (need 2 + 1 for flex) in Yahoo standard:

  17. Would you start Alex Smith or Siemian over Russel? I have Russel but I am worried about that O line getting destroyed by Titans front 7. Thinking about streaming either Smith or Siemian.
