1. Came here to mention Transnistria. A lot of people consider it a parking lot for the Russian military. The currency looks like it was made on a free printer at the library. I believe only one country recognizes them as a sovereign nation: Russia.

  2. Not even Russia officially recognises them. Only the partially recognised or unrecognised states of South Ossetia and Abkhazia have recognised Transnistria as a sovereign entity.

  3. Not automatically. It's easier to get it, since we don't need to go through the normal naturalisation process. But we still need to apply.

  4. Aka what I watch when I need to ugly cry. Works 100% of the time

  5. so she was nameless for a couple of months?

  6. I was nameless for 4 months because my dad wasn't in the country for that long. My mum could have named me, but she chose to wait for him to get back.

  7. Where I live the baby has to be registered within 3 days after the birth, so the concept of being nameless for a long period is very strange to me.

  8. I was even born in a hospital, but still, they waited 4 months till my dad was back in the country.

  9. I got my sewing kit from Rossmann (it's enough to fix a tear, but no big projects). It has a pretty good selection of colours a needle sizes, plus a few useful sewing accessories. I saw some similar supplies (including individual thread spools) in Edeka and Tedi, Woolworth, etc.

  10. I read in National geographic years ago that they were found in Egyptian tombs and it was thought to be one of the few types of food that didn't rot.

  11. Given that corn is from the Americas (and therefore wasn't around in Egypt until at least the end of the 15th century), that should've been quite clear early on.

  12. Do the Amish speak Pennsylvania Dutch? Cause as a German, that is barely comprehensible gibberish. It's no wonder cause it doesn't stem from high German and the small number of speakers has been isolated for so long, the dialect seems to have barely evolved. Calling it German in any capacity is a stretch.

  13. Even modern day Swiss German can be difficult to understand for native Germans. Pennsylvania Dutch is so much worse, but in the same vein.

  14. Sometimes I feel like we should bring these back at least for special occasions or something. Maybe not the rather impractical headwear unless there is a festival going on, but so many of them are really beautiful. And idk having cultural clothes is something beautiful in my eyes (and a bit more interesting than the whole world wearing jeans and a shirt)

  15. Move to Munich. People here still wear traditional clothing on special occasions, including to the office.

  16. I had a classmate in high school whose mother died of cancer right before exam season started (we have 4 mandatory exams to finish highschool in my country). We were all sad, and tried our best to help him, including the teachers. He was understandably sad, but they'd known she wasn't going to survive for a while at that point, so he was doing pretty good (as much as it was possible).

  17. Don't forget that he published it because he wanted to get rich off his own vaccine to replace the MMR that he claimed caused autism.

  18. I never really understood that scene. What is the connection between das doppelte lottchen and being jewish? Sorry if this is a stupid question but this has been bugging me every time xD

  19. He heard German shouting and made some assumptions.

  20. I didn’t think of a potential business specific calc course. I could see that making sense

  21. We're talking integrals. These ones ∫? This is something we are taught in high school, and we definitely need them for economics. Wtf?

  22. Some medications can cause hair to turn strange colors when bleached. My wife recently got her hair dyed and the first step was bleaching. Because of her medication it went from medium brown to a light pink, like an anime character sort of pink. You could even see a line corresponding to a time when her meds were lowered then raised again.

  23. Does it stay that colour afterwards, or is it just a temporary reaction?

  24. Latvian here- Birch sap in the spring. I was absolutely sure that it is a thing at least in whole Nordic region, but I have never met a person outside my country who know what that is. Ah, and tomato and cucumber salad with sour cream or in fact any salad with sour cream.

  25. We definitely have the birch sap and sour cream in salads in Moldova as well.

  26. There was a story on Reddit of a grandma insisting on using coconut oil in the hair of her grandchildren, one of which was extremely allergic. The little girl died, and the grandma didn't understand why the parents didn't want her in their lives anymore.

  27. Is it safe to click TikTok links that your friends send you?

  28. So something similar I can share about Japanese culture.

  29. Back when I was learning Japanese, our teacher (who himself is Japanese) brought in a couple of Kimonos for us extremely white Eastern European kids to try on/take pictures (also taught us how to properly put on one of the simpler types of Kimono) and taught us how to have a proper Japanese tea ceremony. We also had origami and calligraphy lessons taught by Japanese experts.

  30. omg cursive fucked me up in so much when I was going shopping in a supermarket with a list of shit to buy in Odessa.

  31. I've been able to speak, read and write Russian since childhood, and even when it's my own handwriting I sometimes have trouble deciphering the varying lengths of 𝜄𝜄𝜄𝜄𝜄𝜄𝜄𝜄𝜄𝜄𝜄𝜄𝜄𝜄𝜄𝜄.

  32. The fact that men are often disappointed by our very existence as woman, even in utero, continues to highlight societies shitty view of woman. Sorry we exist? Sorry you think you can’t live out your field of dreams fantasies with us? That we aren’t worthy of a relationship with you or overall love since you ASSUME we don’t want to fish with you. It’s actually you that doesn’t want to include us due to archaic gender roles. Why do you assume a son would want to do this with you?!?

  33. My father has always claimed that me being a girl wasn't an issue and that he didn't want a son. But at the same time, anytime I was interested in what he deemed manly (for example, I wanted to learn about cars, but he always brushed me off, since I was a girl and was supposed to not be into cars). Now he's surprised that I'm closer to my mum than to him.

  34. Stole an exam from teachers office. Teacher waited to see who else he gave it to. Both kids expelled.

  35. A few of my classmates did the same thing. They then went on to give/sell it to a bunch of the other kids in my year.

  36. I'm 29 myself and will be graduating at the end of the current semester. You're all good!

  37. The reason English is the Lingua Franca has nothing to do with the simplicity of English (which isn't all that simple, it's just so prevalent it's easier to pick up as opposed to other languages), but with imperialism (English and American). As the name suggests, the previous Lingua Franca was actually French, which you'll agree, is in no way simple, and yet it was the international language up until relatively recently (historically speaking).

  38. Grapefruit has its own section on the BNF because it can interact with 98 medications. Be wary of the grapefruit.

  39. True for all citrus, just to a lesser degree than the grapefruit.

  40. And the frustration when parents wanted to use the phone and you had to switch back from internet and "free" the land line...

  41. I only got a PC in 2003 so we were pretty late to the game, but my mum had the foresight to get two phone lines specifically so that we wouldn't face this issue.

  42. IMHO: The courses taught in German are mostly useless outside DACH. To prevent students from leaving the country they just need to stop teaching in English, this will work for both international and local population.

  43. Good luck teaching Economics, Marketing, Informatics, etc. in German only!

  44. Also one more thing to add. In ancient china, killing someone after they made something, may it be jewelry, clothing or as secret cave, just for the sake that no one else can hire them to do the same thing, is very very common.

  45. It was also common in Europe. Architects from Genoa were brought in to build fortifications in the Russian Empire and once done were given two options: 1. Live like kings in the Empire never allowed to leave; 2. Die.
