To all those stating NIMBY I suggest you start by looking at the location on a map and get a feel for the small area this is. It is literally against the Acadian pioneer cemetery and right beside the pool, maybe 15 feet away. The group that proposed it previously tried to development the areas other provincial park into accomodations, mini mall, and Peking Duck restaurant, in conjunction with a Chinese company. That area is small and of environmental significance, it's right in a bay and home to bank swallows and many marine species with not much room for any sort of development or certainly not the waste treatment associated with something like that. This group is also having issues with statements they made about the local historical societies business having asbestos that they then had to pay to get tested for at the beginning of their operating season. This property is directly across from the proposed development site. Back to the property in question though, there would be concerns again given its location in an environmentally sensitive area with development especially given the size of septic systems would be required. There was even a representative from the local environmental group at the meeting that raised concerns, you can watch the video of the meeting on the council's Facebook. And if you actually look at the prices they've suggested you're really not getting much bang for your buck, and they're not big enough for small families as suggested. They also stated they would be sourcing them from our of province. If you check Google maps you'll quickly see the issues with the area though.
I lived in that area for almost a decade, it is not fit for a development at all for many reasons. There are plenty of other areas in belfast that could accommodate this, but I believe those looking to do the development are a bit shaddy themselves

You need a strong opposition regardless of who is in power. The problem is it always defaults to pure politics of blocking good ideas because someone else wants to banner of presenting it for down the line.
It solves the problem of unreasonable income inequality. Prevents the fracturing of the social fabric, keeps the economic+political power of the wealthy minority in check. It's not a question of fiscal policy, it's a question of sustainability of democracy.
Income inequality has always existed and will exist. There are people driven by building and creating wealth. The issue is that the government should not be exempt from sound criticism on how it spends EVERYONES money.
