HitboTC and PhuzzyBond have great tutorial videos on making gold and staying alive, Blurbs is great on PVP and Boxyfresh is great fun. It's a sandbox game - there is no aim set by the game itself, it's what you make of it and every session is different. In the beginning you would want to make gold so you can buy cosmetics and a captained ship but there's nothing you can buy to give you an advantage. The best fun is in the interactions with other players - some are mad, others are silly, others ate just great, you never know. Remember that treasure is not yours until you have turned it in and it's extremely easy to get again if you lose it so don't get angry and upset if you sink - to PVE or PVP, just focus on the adventure and the thrill of the danger and the risk, whether it pays off or not.
