1. Submission Statement: Edward Lucas, an author and Senior Fellow at the Center for European Policy Analysis, analyzes the approved US aid package to Ukraine and outlines what it means for defending against Russia. While the military assistance will help address shortages, America and Europe failed Ukraine in the past six months by not providing swift, sufficient support. The political delays handed advantages to Russia, allowing it to refine tactics and resupply troops - factors that have cost Ukrainian lives. The West must learn from mistakes to maintain resolve backing Ukraine.

  2. "Ukrainians are tired but still determined, and will continue to resist Russia whether the world helps them or not."

  3. Submission statement: Daniel Hamilton, a Senior Fellow at the Brookings Institution, and the Foreign Policy Institute of Johns Hopkins University SAIS, argues that while the US and EU face challenges from China's rising economic power, the transatlantic economy remains much more substantial than either entity's trade with China individually. However, Hamilton notes that Washington and Brussels have not fully capitalized on this strategic economic edge over Beijing. The transatlantic alliance must do more to align policies, resolve disputes, and forge a united front on issues like investment screening and export controls to manage their economic relationships more effectively with China going forward.

  5. Submission Statement: Dina Al Raffie, a professor of international security studies at Duquesne University, argues that Western countries should continue sharing counter-terrorism intelligence with Russia, even as political relations have soured, because global cooperation is needed to address transnational terrorist threats. While Russia did not act optimally on a recent US warning about an attack in Moscow, Al Raffie says intelligence is not always actionable and failures can still occur even with close cooperation. More broadly, intelligence sharing has pragmatic and strategic benefits in combating groups like ISIS that endanger all countries, so it should not be halted completely due to political disputes.

  6. Submission Statement: Russia has intensified its attacks on Ukraine's energy infrastructure in recent months, destroying multiple thermal power plants, hydroelectric dams, and natural gas storage facilities, which has reduced Ukraine's power generation capacity by 60% and caused mass blackouts across the country. This strategy of targeting Ukraine's ability to provide power and heat appears aimed at making the country unlivable through the winter, and the large-scale damage will be extremely difficult and costly and take years to fully repair, dealing a major blow to Ukraine's reconstruction efforts and economic recovery.
