1. Seems like the the best solution is to track down your old instructor. There's always the Airman database on the FAA site which may give you an address. There's also paid services on the web that can give you individual contact info. I'd say putting some effort into finding where the guy ended up is preferable, and cheaper, than re-doing the solo hours.

  2. Carb heat on a C172 is worth 50 RPM at full throttle. In the half second it takes to push it in you cannot detect the difference it’s making in performance. So it really isn’t doing anything to your go-around performance.

  3. Great answer. The potential gain of 50 RPM over the few seconds it takes me to push in the carb heat doesn't seem to outweigh the potential for increased carb ice and much more than 50 rpm loss if I prematurely turn off my carb heat.

  4. It just comes down to the overall amount of knowledge you need to learn, remember, and be able to apply in flight. The flying isn't difficult, but does require precision and refinement that isn't needed in VFR flying.

  5. Flew recently with a buddy who is a military pilot in a 707 type airframe. Two biggest issues were dealing with vfr at an uncontrolled field and non-ifr ATC comms, and learning not to flare 35 ft above the runway. Other than that the guy was spot on.

  6. What a stupid thing to say. How does "seeing" an illegal immigrant somehow validate one's level of concern? I can have positions on many things that I haven't seen. I've never met a serial killer, but I don't think we should let them roam free. I've never been through a home invasion, but know it is not a good thing.

  7. There's some missing pieces here that have me confused a little bit. Was this person a student? If so then did the CFI train them on school policy regarding the power limitations? If not a student, was it part of the checkout procedure or in the rental agreement? Obviously you can't hold someone accountable for things they don't know about outside of approved guidance, i.e. the POH.

  8. Direct to the numbers at about 100’ AGL. No need for radio calls, legally everyone else has to give way!

  9. The disdain for retirees is one of the things that make this sub suck.

  10. LOL, as a retiree it’s one of my favorite things about this sub.

  11. I got my FAA tickets through two different flight schools. Neither one was perfect, but they both were nothing near what the OP describes. Generally well run by good people who understood the operation, were reasonable to work with, and had a real safety culture.

  12. They all went up, but USAA needs to pay their stupid fuck CEO a fat multi million dollar bonus, so they went up a lot more along with massive layoffs.

  13. They’re paying Gronk for all their marketing. In dumped USAA last year after almost 40 years for State Farm. Better rates and much better service.

  14. It is funny to me that everybody dreads the power off 180. The one maneuver in the whole ACS for commercial that could actually save your life.

  15. Being able to get a plan on the runway from the downwind with no power is a great skill. That said, the CPL ACS doesn't present it as an emergency procedure, but a precision flying maneuver to demonstrate energy management. The tight standards and the fact that you get one chance make it a high risk item for the check ride. I get why it's in there and should be taught, but I think there needs to be more leeway there.

  16. Got my CFI in June and just got the same email and a hardcopy of the FAA safety magazine with a note congratulating me on my new rating.

  17. Wait, I was assured it was just property and besides they all had insurance, right?

  18. It is clearly marked as the INOP (Inertial Navigation Oriented Positioner). Don't they teach this in ground school anymore?

  19. Kids today and their damned magenta line! There’s no circuit breaker on my abacus!!!

  20. Your flaps don't deploy during preflight. Flaps aren't a required item per 91-205. Is your aircraft airworthy? How do you know? Same question, but what about your attitude indicator?

  21. I found the ASA test prep books to be great practice for the FAA written exams. I'm also a fan of Sheppard Air, but that's not going to help on the Private level since they don't have one.

  22. That’s the ghost of the UNO football program whispering softly at you.

  23. Camp 18, Oregon sounds like a great title for a horror movie.

  24. Sorry to have to say it, but you’ll need to burn the whole place two the ground then cover it in two inches of concrete.

  25. Congrats. 10-12 knots right down the runway? That's about as nice as it can get! You'll appreciate those when you start working on short field landings.

  26. It was the most wind I’ve flown in so far, I was hesitant to put in the third set of flaps and wanted to only use two, but I remembered a tip I heard for first solos that said, “don’t try anything new” so I used the third set on final and bumped some power to creep my way in

  27. Well nicely done. It will all come with practice. Have fun along the way.

  28. I'm triggered at the thought of doing that oral 3 times. Brutal. Congrats on getting through it. That's rough.

  29. My CFI oral didn’t go that long. Plan on 1.5 to 2 hours.
